One part of it separated by a curtain was her kitchen. She at last released the boy pointing to a water-basin. The boy looked at the open door wistfully. He felt he could run away. But he checked himself. A minute or two, he went to wash his face.

Still his panic was not removed. He feared imprisonment. The woman did not mind his

doubt. She wanted to know if hunger or starvation impelled the boy to snatch her purse. Now the boy came out with his secret. He longed for a pair of blue suede shoes. The woman understood him fully. It was a whim of a young boy. She told him that he could have asked her for the price of the shoes. The

boy was deeply moved. For a long time no oral communication took place. Now the boy, having washed, stood undecided. The door was open as before. He could avail himself of the chance. Yet he felt no urge to run. The woman was on the sofa. She narrated her own youth. She too was like the boy, wanted many things in her young days. She had no chance to have them. But she did not

try to snatch other's purse. Anyway she had done wrongs. But she would not disclose them to anyone. The boy, heard her silently. The woman stood up. She started making some cocoa and heated some lima beans and ham. The boy gave up all his wish to escape. The food was made ready. The woman called the boy. They began to take their supper. The woman asked not a word about the boy's

personal life. She went on describing her job. She worked in a beauty-parlour where she met

a wide variety of women customers. The supper was on. The woman requested the boy to eat more. The mother in her was working in full splender. The supper was over. The woman offered the boy ten dollars, the probable price of the blue suede shoes. She bade him goodnight. The boy was ready to leave the room. The woman's advice 'Behave yourself, boy' was still ringing in his ears. He wanted

to express his gratefulness. He felt just a 'Thank You Ma'am' was not enough. She deserved more. But something stopped him from going further. He barely managed to say 'Thank you, ma'am'. The door was closed. He never saw her again.
